![]() ![]() Annex 1 countries on average had 10.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide per capita, and 12.9 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent of all gases per capita.Emissions are measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. The Annex and each country show two bars which represent carbon dioxide only per capita and emissions of all gases per capita. The average for Annex 1 countries (as named by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) are compared with Australia, Japan, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Read the long description for International comparisons for per capita emissions (in million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, Mt CO 2-e) in 2018įigure 9 is a bar graph that compares emissions per capita for several different countries in 2018. Based on the latest available Inventory data for 2018 for Annex 1 countries, New Zealand’s gross emissions ranked 24 th among the Annex I countries, but New Zealand’s emissions per person were the sixth highest at 16.9 tonnes carbon dioxide equivalent (CO 2-e) per capita. The high level of agricultural production in New Zealand means we produce a lot of methane and nitrous oxidehave a greater warming effect compared with carbon dioxide. Note that the comparison is made with Annex I countries because these countries all use the same methodologies to report their emissions. Annex I data in these comparisons count the members of the European Union (EU) separately, and exclude the EU as a whole. Typically, the Agriculture sector constitutes only a small proportion of gross emissions (12.3 per cent on average in Annex I countries).Īll emissions data in this section are from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Data Interface (2020). This is because nearly half of New Zealand’s emissions come from the Agriculture sector (48 per cent). New Zealand's emissions profile is different to that of most other 43 Annex I countries. Our emissions are globally small, but high per capita ![]()
